I have found a lost or abandoned pet. How can I find him/her a foster home?
Make sure to contact your local animal control to list the pet as found, place a found ad in the local newspapers (usually free), and post a classified ad online for free on Petfinder.com. Take the pet by the shelter or local vet to be scanned for a microchip identification, and put up flyers in the area where the animal was found.
Don't overlook word-of-mouth. Quite often "friends of friends" know someone who can temporary foster a pet. If you just can't find a good home through your contacts, try classified advertising or placing flyers (with a photo of the pet and a description: spayed/neutered, vaccinations up to date, good with kids, good with cats/dogs) in pet stores, veterinary offices, places of worships, markets, health clubs and other strategic places.
If you are willing to foster the pet, you can ask animal rescue groups if they could sponsor it. You can also ask animal rescue groups to post a photo of the pet on their web site, or maybe attend their adoption events. For a list of rescue groups in the Triangle, click here. To find an animal rescue group in your city, visit Petfinder.com and click on "Shelter & rescue groups." If you can't foster the pet, consider boarding the pet in a kennel or vet's office until you find him a new home. Ask for a discount since it is a rescued animal.
A booklet prepared by Best Friends Animal Sancturay gives you tips on how to prepare good flyers, spread the word, advertise, prepare your pet, and guide you through the screening process of potential [foster parents]. READ MORE
