Animal Welfare Organizations Serving Orange County

Choose an organization for which you would like to foster. Keep in mind that some of these organizations can bring the animal(s) to your home even if they may not be located in your city. For detailed description of guidelines, click here.

Animal Protection Society of Orange County


Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Animals to foster: cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, snakes, and other domestic or farm animals.
Pet food/litter/medications provided by organization? Only medical care with the APS veterinarian are covered. After hours emergencies, you must contact our emergency staff on call. If you take the animal to your own vet, you must pay the bill. Food and litter are foster parents responsibility.

Other procedures/guidelines? All cats must remain indoors at all times. Dogs must also be indoors with outdoor privileges.

Carolina Basset Hound Rescue


Location: Goldsboro, NC
Animals to foster
: dogs (Basset hounds)
Pet food & medications provided by organization? Medication, heartworm, flea control, and vet bills are paid by organization. Food is foster parents responsibility.
Minimum fostering commitment? 2 weeks
Foster-parent training orientation required? optional
Foster-parent transport animals to adoption events? optional
Foster-parent transport animals to vet? yes
Adopters visit foster homes? yes
Other procedures/guidelines? Foster homes must have a home visit before approval. Dog(s) must be kept indoors with outdoor privileges for exercise and bathroom duties (on a hand held leash while outside). All personal pets must be up-to-date on their vaccinations and be on heartworm prevention.

Carolina Boxer Rescue

Doberman Rescue of North Carolina

: dogs (Doberman Pinschers)

Minimum fostering commitment? 2 months
Foster-parent training orientation required? home visit required

Other procedures/guidelines? Dog(s) must be kenneled in a secure, fenced yard or inside the house during the day. Dog(s) must sleep inside the house. Dog(s) must be kept on a lead, in the house, or in a fenced yard on the grounds of the foster home at all times.

Independent Animal Rescue


Location: Durham, NC

Minimum fostering commitment? 3 weeks

Other procedures/guidelines? Foster home screening includes home visit. 12 hour limit on time dog will be confined to pen. Cats to be kept inside only.

North Carolina Rottweiler Rescue


Location: Raleigh, NC

: dogs (Rottweilers)

Minimum fostering commitment? 2 months
Foster-parent training orientation required? optional
Foster-parent transport animals to adoption events? If the foster home is located within 30 miles of the event.
Foster-parent transport animals to vet? yes
Adopters visit foster homes? optional
Other procedures/guidelines? Foster homes may have a kennel area to keep the fosters in but only after the area has been approved by a board member. No foster dog is permitted to be chained. We prefer inside foster homes but know that they are very hard to come by especially for large breed dogs. Crate can be provided. Foster Manual is supplied along with ongoing support thru organization.

Southern Siberian Rescue


Location: Raleigh, NC

: dogs (Siberian Husky)
Pet food & medications provided by organization? All medical care, ID tags and collars are provided by organization. Foster homes provide food, love, socialization and basic obedience.
Minimum fostering commitment? 2 weeks
Foster-parent training orientation required? optional
Foster-parent transport animals to adoption events? Yes, but we recognize that you can't always attend every event.
Foster-parent transport animals to vet? yes
Adopters visit foster homes? no
Other procedures/guidelines? Home check for all potential foster homes are required. All foster dogs are kept inside as a member of the family so they may learn proper house manners and socialization. We do not require a fenced in area but need to know the foster dog will be properly exercised.
